The ROME Foundation, a leading authority in gastroenterology, has recognized GDH as a valid therapeutic approach for IBS. The ROME guidelines are widely respected and used by gastroenterologists worldwide to diagnose and manage functional gastrointestinal disorders, including IBS. The inclusion of GDH in these guidelines underscores its credibility and the growing acceptance of this therapy within the medical community.
The Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG) also acknowledges the benefits of GDH. According to their clinical practice guidelines, GDH can significantly alleviate IBS symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and irregular bowel movements. This endorsement highlights the importance of considering GDH, especially for patients who have not found relief through traditional treatments like diet changes and medication.
A pivotal study conducted in 2016 by researchers at Monash University compared GDH with the low FODMAP diet. The results were striking and highly relevant for those seeking alternatives when dietary changes alone are insufficient. The study concluded that GDH was as effective as the low FODMAP diet in reducing gastrointestinal symptoms. Additionally, GDH had a more significant impact on improving psychological well-being, which is a critical component of managing IBS. This finding emphasizes the importance of addressing IBS’s physical and psychological aspects.
As a Registered Dietitian who has lived with IBD and IBS symptoms for over 30 years, I find the concept of GDH particularly intriguing. My journey with GDH began during the COVID-19 pandemic when I was working virtually with IBS and IBD patients. One of my patients, Lily, had been struggling with multiple gastrointestinal issues and a negative mindset towards food and her symptoms. Traditional dietary changes were not practical for her, mainly due to her anxiety and disordered eating patterns. After introducing GDH, we saw significant improvements in her symptoms and overall well-being within a few weeks. This case highlighted the potential of GDH to provide a psychological tool for patients who have not responded well to other treatments. Since Lily, I have had more IBS clients use GDH to reduce and manage their IBS symptoms.
