Hockey Mom Tips #4 : Kids who diet

scale-403585_640

I cringe when I hear about some of the diets that my kids’ friends are on. The “cleansing” diet? The “low carb” diet? The “Paleo” diet? The “alkaline” diet? The “grapefruit” diet? There always seems to be some new diet coming out. Why are these kids dieting in the first place? Don’t they know that they are still growing and that they need to feed their developing bodies a good variety of nutritious foods? Kids (and their parents) shouldn’t believe everything that they read about diets on the Internet, or hear from their friends, or from people who should know better, but may not (teacher, trainer, coach). I tell my kids that since they are healthy and have no medical issues, the only “diet” that they should be on is a nutritious balanced one. They seemed relieved to hear that because some of the diets are strange and really hard to follow!
