A player with a lean mean hockey body can have a performance edge over another player who carries extra weight. Hockey is often about speed and extra weight can slow a player down. While there are some safe and easy ways to get “lean”, severe dietary restrictions for children is NOT safe unless there is close medical supervision. Children need enough calories and nutrients for proper growth and development, so be sure to consult a professional if you feel that your child’s body composition could be improved. There are some safe performance-enhancing behaviors that every parent should feel comfortable promoting – adequate rest, proper nutrition and hydration, respecting each player’s individual digestion times and pre-hockey preferences. Body composition is just one piece in the performance puzzle, so don’t forget the other pieces to complete the picture!
