Many of you have been curious to learn more about the SOSCuisine team. Behind the website, recipes, newsletter and professional services, there is a multitude of talent and expertise to inspire you and help you to eat better. This week, we introduce to you our dietitian Kathryn, who is specialised in sports nutrition and gastrointestinal health.
At first glance, my interest was really in sports nutrition. Back in high school and even a little before, I was a cross-country and track and field athlete. I am originally from Montreal, but I studied in Quebec City because I was on the Red and Gold cross-country team at Laval University. So, I discovered my interest in nutrition through my passion for sports. As I was less interested in the internships at the hospital that come with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics, I set my sights instead on a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology to begin with.
Eventually though, as I still had a desire to be a dietitian, I decided to complete the hospital internships and achieve my bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics. I also did a master’s degree in sports nutrition at Laval University and completed the American certification to be a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD). Over time, I have also developed interests in other aspects of nutrition, such as gastrointestinal health. We’ve been hearing more and more about the microbiota in recent years, and it really interests me! I have also completed Monash university’s training on Low-FODMAP diets for irritable bowel syndrome.
I saw that SOSCuisine was recruiting and after researching the services they offered, I found it to be a good concept! The position interested me because I like variety and through SOSCuisine, I can work with different aspects I like, such as client consultations, but also write articles for the blog and many other exciting activities related to nutrition.
For our VIP guests, the nice thing is that they already have their meal planss prepared for them. My role is therefore to accompany them in their choice of meal plan, help them to personalize it even more, and provide them with nutritional advice. So yes, I work with VIP customers and write nutritional articles, but there is also much more! I am additionally a dietitian-consultant, so I am counted on for my experience and credibility to advise the team during product development.
I think one of the challenges for dietitian in general is to encourage people to turn towards evidence-based studies and scientific data on nutrition, which are constantly updating and evolving. It’s not always easy though! There are a lot of myths circulating around nutrition and everyone gives advice based on their own personal experiences. It is therefore necessary to establish a trusting relationship with our clients. There are people who have certain beliefs, because someone close to them has recommended this or that, but nutrition is a science, not an opinion, and what has worked for one person is not necessarily appropriate for another. My role, as a dietitian, is therefore to stay up to date with the latest knowledge in nutrition and to use this knowledge to give personalized advice to everyone.
