Mini Guide to Baked Cereals: Baked cereals are so popular among athletes that I routinely get asked to give cereal reviews. Because there are so many cereal varieties available here is a mini guide to choosing a good cereal.

  • Whole ingredients need to be the stars of the cereal. This means that the first ingredient on the label should be a whole grain. And, if the second ingredient is a grain as well it should be a whole grain too.
  • The free sugar is low. When the sugar content of a baked cereal is under 5 grams of sugar per 30 gram portion I give my approval. I like to visualize each 5 grams of sugar as a sugar pack like the ones you will find in a coffee shop. So if you eat 100 grams of cereal like you might if you are an elite hockey player hopefully you are not eating more than 2 sugar packs worth of sugar! Of course there are all kinds of cereals so if the cereal you are considering has dried fruit in it you will see that the sugar content is higher. In this case you can relax the sugar rule a bit while still keeping in mind that it is often better to have fruit in its whole and fresh form instead of dried.

What is special about Flax Plus Multigrain Flakes: This cereal fits the requirements in the mini guide to choosing a baked cereal. Flax Plus has added flaxseed which might provide a small quantity of healthy fat and added fibre. And, importantly this cereal is readily available in many grocery stores in North America.

When to eat Flax Plus Multigrain Flakes: Eat it 3 to 4 hours before a game in a quantity to meet meal requirements. Start with 100 grams of cereal (2 & ⅓ cups). To make cereal work for an athlete’s meal have it with milk and add a vegetable protein combo such as an egg and spinach omelette. Cereal eaten in small amounts such as 50 gram (1 & ¼ cup) portions can also make a good snack 1 to 2 hours before a game.
