The tools developed by Health Canada will encourage people to reduce the amount of prepared and processed foods that are rich in salt, sugar and/or saturated fats, and suggest you abstain from drinking beverages that are high in sugar. This means soft drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks and other sugary drinks (flavored milks, etc.).
This is great news, because we know that increased consumption of sugar is associated with an increased risk of obesity and diabetes in adults, and obesity and tooth decay in children, and that the main source of added sugar in Canadians’ diets is precisely drinks that are high in sugar.
