Summer is perfect for picnics and barbecue parties in the sun with family and friends. Such festive meals must end with a special dessert. To take advantage of the fruit bounty during summer, we have prepared for you the list of our best 10 light and fruity desserts.
Pronounced “kla-foo-TEE”, this country-French dessert is made by topping a layer of fresh fruit with batter. The unusual name comes from “clafir”, a dialect word meaning “to fill” (with cherries). It can be made with any ripe fruit, but the classic one, from the Limousin region, is made with unpitted cherries (not out of laziness of the cook, but because the pit provides a special flavour to the flan).
An Italian contribution to summer desserts, “granita” (pr. grah-nee-tah) is a grainy frozen mixture of sugar, water, and a flavoured liquid. Less rich and easier to prepare than its close cousin, the sorbet, “granita” is always a great hit with kids.
Do not turn off the barbecue after the meal, because this dessert must be grilled. It’s a great way to savour peaches!
